Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original wide woven fiber shield attributed to the Azande people of the Belgian Congo, now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Shields held an important place in African warfare, serving both as practical defensive equipment and as visible symbols of a warrior’s status and identity.
By the 19th century, the Azande were widely regarded as formidable and successful warriors. Their distinctive oblong wickerwork shields provided protection in combat while also helping conceal weapons, including the throwing knife, until the moment of use.
This is an unusually broad example, measuring approximately 24 ½ inches tall by 41 inches wide. The front displays heavily worn woven and leather patterns, with brass bosses studded along the central bend. The surface, construction, and extensive wear all indicate an entirely original piece that saw substantial period use.
The shield likely dates to the very late 19th century or the early 20th century. Its original handle remains well retained. The upper and lower edges show heavy wear, fraying, and areas of material loss, all consistent with its age and long service life.
With its impressive width, distinctive woven construction, brass decoration, and strong signs of authentic use, this is a striking ethnographic display piece from the Belgian Congo and an evocative example of traditional Azande defensive equipment.
