Original Item. Only One Available. This is a gorgeous example of an Austro-Hungarian Model of 1904 Cavalry sword. This saber was adopted for service in 1904 by the cavalry regiments of the Austro-Hungarian Army. All of the armies which went to war in 1914 incorporated a significant cavalry element. With aerial observation in its infancy, cavalry provided the main means of reconnaissance for all the combatants during the opening campaigns of the war. Mounted troops continued to play a significant role on the Eastern Front long after complex trench systems had rendered them superfluous in the West.
The 34¼” blade is in fair condition and is marked on the ricasso:
PACHOLEK GYORGY
BUDAPEST
W-n (Eagle) 15
This indicates manufacture by Pacholek Gyorgy of Budapest, and we believe the proof marking below that to indicate manufacture in 1915.
The hilt shows honest service-use, with a small bit of the guard missing with heavy pitting around it. This could be an indication of battle or shrapnel damage, or it could just be from oxidation which has now been neutralized. The grip material is a ray skin rather than sharkskin shagreen, and is heavily worn with some material missing at the edges. If there was a wire wrap at one point, it is now gone. The edges of guard are turned over to protect the wearer's uniform from chafing, and two narrow elongated oval slots are formed, side-by-side, in the upper guard, above the blade.
The original 35¼” steel scabbard retains much of its original black paint, with chipping present. It is marked on the throat with 5.H.E., possibly a unit marking, and on the other side with 179, likely a soldier or rack number.
A great example of an Austro-Hungarian WWI Cavalry saber, ready for further research and display.
