Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is an outstanding assembled group of Australian WWI and WWII-era field equipment, including several scarce pieces associated with ANZAC service. Some components are clearly marked for Australian manufacture or issue, while others are unmarked but came from a prestigious ANZAC collection. The group spans both world wars, with the most clearly dated WWII component being a 1940-dated leather rifle sling manufactured in Sydney. The rarest item in the lot is an Australian-made shelter half or tent section fitted with CARR’S PATENT marked grommets.
The items include:
- Extremely rare ANZAC Australian-made shelter half / tent, with grommets which are marked on the back CARR’S PAT 23608 / AUSTRALIA. There is a faint purple stamp on the piece reading HIKE TENT.
- 10 ½” cut fragment of an Australian hate belt with an attached uniform button, AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH MILITARY FORCES hat badge, an ASC shoulder title, and a Canadian 21st Battalion badge. There is a faint written name or maker mark, a good research project though there is heavy decay to the belt.
- Leather rifle sling for the SMLE rifle, marked for a maker in Sydney, Australia, dated 1940. There is the leather thong still attached but the other end of the sling has heavy wear with some rubbing along its length. It measures roughly 39” long but does not lie flat down due to heavy wear.
- Australian Cavalry ammunition pouch meant to attach to belt, with Broad Arrow over H stamped onto securing strap. No other markings but it is excellent. The Broad Arrow over H typically indicates the Harness Factory (specifically the Commonwealth Government Harness Factory based in Clifton Hill, Melbourne).
- 24” fragment of an Australian belt that used to be a hate belt with holes where badges were once attached. Belt has one end of buckle but is cut off at other end.
- 41” thick leather belt that was once an Australian halt belt, with outlines of several recognisable badges across its length. There is no maker mark on the belt.
“Hate belts” were personalized souvenir belts decorated with collected military insignia, buttons, badges, and other small objects, often traded between soldiers or acquired during overseas service. The surviving fragments in this group provide a useful glimpse into this collecting culture, particularly through the combination of Australian and Canadian insignia.
Taken together, the marked Australian shelter half, 1940-dated Sydney rifle sling, cavalry ammunition pouch, and surviving hate-belt fragments form an unusually varied group of Australian military field equipment and personal souvenirs. The CARR’S PAT 23608 / AUSTRALIA grommets, wartime sling date, surviving insignia, and multiple evidence of field use make the lot especially worthwhile for further research and display in an ANZAC-focused collection.
