Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is a very nice assembled group of Australian and British WWI-era field equipment associated with mounted and cavalry service. Some pieces are clearly marked for Australian manufacture or use, while others are British-made or remain unidentified, but all came from a prestigious ANZAC collection. The group includes a Pattern 1914 leather “snake” belt, a rare 1916-dated cavalry bandolier, a horseshoe carrier, spur, long Australian-made leather strap, and a large 1915-dated carrying case whose exact original purpose remains uncertain.
The items include:
- Australian WWI Pattern 1914 Leather Equipment “Snake” S-buckle belt with keeper, buckle, and some faint stamps on the back which may be unit markings. There is a semi-circle shaped maker’s stamp to one end, with a name that appears to read WILCOX or WILCO, likely an Australian manufacturer, a good research project.
- British WWI Cavalry carrying case likely for a rifle or other large piece of cavalry equipment, stamped on the securing strap W. THOMLINSON LTD. / 1915. William Thomlinson Limited was a prominent Scottish leather goods manufacturer based at 450 Dumbarton Road in Partick, Glasgow. This piece of gear requires some more research. One of the straps on the back is gone, and there is moderate wear across. The small tag says this is an Australian pioneer tool holder, but this is likely wrong. A forum notes it could be a leather gun or barrel carrier, possibly for a vickers. The back of the case is stamped with Broad Arrow over 61.
- British Horseshoe carrier, marked with Broad Arrow over S. Heavy verdigris but good shape overall.
- Australian extremely stiff and damaged Cavalry Bandolier faintly marked at one end BECKER’S / 1916. A fantastic relic but one that should not be unbuckled. Very heavy wear and damage but a very rare piece.
- WWI Australian Cavalry spur with leather straps. There is heavy oxidation across so there are no markings present, though the collection tag notes it as Australian. From photos we can find online, this is indeed an Australian spur with the correct intricate buckle system.
- Worn long leather strap stamped at one end with J.J. WEEKES LTD / 1910 / SYDNEY for J. J. Weekes, Ltd., a prominent Australian merchant and manufacturing firm located at the corner of Kent and Druitt Streets in Sydney. Likely cavalry related. Strap and buckle are in good shape with minor tearing and residue.
Taken together, the 1916 Becker’s cavalry bandolier, Australian Pattern 1914 snake belt, 1910 J.J. Weekes Ltd. Sydney strap, 1915-dated W. Thomlinson carrying case, horseshoe carrier, and cavalry spur provide an unusually varied cross-section of leather equipment associated with Australian and British mounted service during the First World War. The combination of dated maker markings, Broad Arrow stamps, specialized cavalry fittings, and unresolved equipment identifications also makes the group particularly worthwhile for further research into ANZAC field equipment and mounted-service material.
