Original Item: Only one Available. This is something that we have not had before, and is definitely rare to find on the market! This is an Antique Spanish made Mauser Model 1895 Carbine, made by Fábrica de Armas at its factory in Oviedo under license after the original examples were made by Ludwig Loewe in Berlin. As this is dated 1898, it is definitively classified a Pre-1899 antique firearm by the BATF. This example was made very early in production, as most were made after this time.
This model rifle, like most of the famous Mauser rifles, was designed by Paul Mauser himself, and is chambered in 7×57mm Mauser. The Model 1895 Carbine is shortening and modification of the Model 1893 Rifle. While almost always referred to as the "Spanish Mauser", Model 1893 design was also marketed to various other governments worldwide. As this example was made in Spain proper, it is definitely a "Spanish Mauser".
This was manufactured at the factory in Oviedo, Spain, as indicated by the markings on the receiver over the chamber:-
(Crown)
FABRICA DE ARMAS
OVIEDO
1898
It is also marked with serial number 4031 on the side of the receiver, the side of the stock, and on the front of the magazine housing on the underside. The markings on the turned down bolt handle are not legible, and we cannot see serial number markings on any other components. We have also noted the the sling loop on the left side of the butt stock was removed at some point, and then had a channel ground into the side. The swivel and ring on the bottom of the butt stock is present, as is the left side sling on the barrel band.
The carbine is in very nice condition, with some the original finish retained on the metalwork, with the rest faded to a gray oxidized patina. There are still traces of the lovely "niter blued" finish on the magazine follower, which is definitely rare. The stock is in very nice shape, showing no major damage, just the usual wear from service.
The rifle cycles nicely, and does not appear to have any mechanical issues, except that the safety is worn and not able to be engaged. The magazine follower correctly pops up to obstruct the bolt when the magazine is empty, making sure that the soldier would remember to load a new stripper clip into the internal magazine. The bore is in very good condition, with strong lands and grooves and a mostly bright finish. There is some light fouling and oxidation in the grooves, as expected from a weapon that saw real service.
A very nice example of an Oviedo-made Spanish Model 1895 Mauser Carbine, ready to research and display!
