Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a phenomenal and simply anomalous example of an American Revolutionary War Era Naval “Figure-of-Eight” Cutlass in original untouched condition, with an astoundingly-lengthy blade measuring 48”, that’s four feet long! Due to the nature of a naval cutlass, we are left scratching our heads wondering why an example of this length would ever have been produced, but the cutlass is in its original configuration without any alterations, which only raises further questions! It could possibly be a cavalry sword with a cutlass-style hilt, but we will never know for sure. This is by far the longest naval cutlass we have ever seen, and one that we know we’ll never see another of.
The cutlass is designed in the classic Figure-of-Eight fashion, with the entire cutlass having a similar peppery oxidation. The cutlass has suffered the salt air of the oceans and is typically rusted (stabilized) and pitted. The blade is mostly straight without any serious deviation. The hilt is designed in the style of late 18th century cutlasses with an iron grip. This was not replaced with a ribbed grip until the 1804 model. The overall length of the cutlass is roughly 52¼”.
This is a tremendous example which will easily become the centerpiece of any Naval Warfare collection. We will never see another example like it. Comes ready for further research and display.
