Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous American Revolutionary War powder horn which has been scrimshawed to commemorate the service of the soldier who carried it. There is a depiction of a warship as well as a depiction of an American Church. Below the ship is etched JOSH. CROW / HIS HORN. From our research, the only soldier of the Revolutionary Era to carry this moniker was Private Joshua Crow, who served in the 2nd New York Regiment during the Revolution, and in both Hay’s Regiment and Cooper’s Regiment of the New York Militia after the Revolution. We can find that he enlisted in Cooper’s regiment in 1786, three years following the end of the Revolution. We can’t find much else on Crow’s service, making this a great research opportunity.
The small horn measures roughly 7” long and is beautifully carved around the mouth, with a depiction of a braided rope at the edge of the carving. The horn is carved into what resemble teardrops halfway down the horn. The wooden base of the horn is well-retained with the small iron ring still intact at the end. This would have held the original carrying strap.
From our research we can see that Crow enlisted in Orange, New York and served in the 2nd Regiment of New York, which saw combat in the Invasion of Canada, Battle of Valcour Island, Battle of Saratoga, Battle of Monmouth, the Sullivan Expedition and the Battle of Yorktown.
This is a truly tremendous powder horn that was certainly used for a number of years by Crow. There is definitely more to be found about his service. Comes ready for further research and display.
