Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely and rare American Revolutionary War or War spontoon head, which we assume was used on the Colonial Side, due to its crude construction. While sometimes effective at removing an opposing soldier from his horse, the spontoon pole arm was not so much a weapon as it was a sign of rank used by Sergeants and other N.C.O.s. The spoontoon / pike head has been mounted on a contemporary shaft to put it back into its contextual history, with a spike attached at the bottom that is likely from the same period. The entire piece altogether measures 77 ½” long.
The spontoon / pike head itself is similar to some examples seen in “Swords & Blades of the American Revolution” by George C. Neumann. It is blacksmith-made and of wrought iron. The construction is very crude, with its crossbar being one piece with each end pointed downward. The construction is correct for the period. The back of the spontoon head shows the crude method of wrapping the iron around the shaft, leaving a large section open. The entire spontoon pike head is 10 ⅛” long, with the blade itself being 6 ⅝” long.
The bottom of the contemporary shaft has a small iron end piece with a period pike spike glued on, likely not the exact one that went with this spontoon but correct for the period and a great addition to make this as close to how it would’ve originally been used as possible.
An outstanding piece to complement any American Revolutionary War or Colonial collection. The shaft could certainly be darkened to give it a better look. Ready for display!
