Original 19th Century U.S. “Ships in a Bottle” Maritime Folk Art made with Bristol’s Sarsaparilla Bottle

Original Item: One of a Kind. Here we have a classic example of maritime folk art: Ships in a bottle! These are always very interesting, as the ships themselves must be designed to fit into the small opening of the bottle, and then are unfolded INSIDE the bottle. All of the positioning and such must be done through the bottle opening, and is a long tedious process, so even simple scenes such as this are a significant time commitment.
The two vessels inside are U.S. 19th century style sailing ships, and appear to be a Clipper Ship and a Schooner. Condition is very good, though the neck of the bottle was broken off at some point, and the rough edges sanded down. We do not know if this was done before or after the ships were added. Measures approximately 8 ½” x 2 ½” x 4”.
