Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent original late 19th century Swedish Model 1893 cavalry officer’s saber manufactured by E. Svalling of Eskilstuna. It features an ornate brass guard displaying the Lesser Coat of Arms of Sweden, a leather-covered grip with gilt wire binding, a long double-fullered spear-point blade, its original steel scabbard, and a leather officer’s sword knot.

The saber follows the general form of the Swedish M1893 cavalry weapon but is constructed as the more refined officer version. The hilt is considerably more decorative than the standard enlisted pattern, while the blade has a double-edged spear point and twin fullers rather than the heavier single-fullered construction encountered on many enlisted cavalry sabers.

The blade measures an impressive 36 5/8" and remains in excellent condition. It retains a bright appearance with only light surface wear and little to no oxidation. The original leather blade buffer remains fitted at the base of the blade.

E. Svalling of Eskilstuna was a recognized Swedish manufacturer of military swords and edged weapons. The Swedish History Museum collection includes a documented M1893 cavalry officer’s saber bearing the same E. Svalling Eskilstuna marking.

The sturdy brass handguard is open on both sides and pierced with attractive decorative designs. Attached to the guard is the Swedish Lesser Coat of Arms, consisting of a crowned shield bearing the traditional Three Crowns of Sweden.

The guard appears originally to have been fully gilt. Much of the gilt finish has worn away through age and handling, leaving an attractive mellow brass patina with traces of the brighter original surface remaining in protected areas.

The grip is constructed from wood covered in dark leather and wrapped with two twisted pairs of gilt brass wire. The wire remains complete and tight. The leather shows rubbing, age wear, and scattered material loss, but the grip remains solid and securely attached to the blade.

An original leather officer’s sword knot remains tied around the hilt. It shows expected age and handling wear but adds considerably to the saber’s complete and impressive appearance.

The scabbard is constructed from blued steel and retains its suspension fitting near the throat. A horizontal flat loop is mounted on the reverse for hitching up the scabbard when mounted or when greater freedom of movement was required.

The scabbard remains in relatively good condition with finish wear, light oxidation, and two substantial dents to the body. Neither dent prevents the blade from being inserted or withdrawn. The drag is stamped with the same E. Svalling maker marking found on the blade, confirming that the saber and scabbard were manufactured as a matching set.

This is an especially attractive example of the Swedish M1893 cavalry officer’s saber. The long bright blade, elaborate pierced guard, Swedish Three Crowns emblem, original sword knot, matching maker-marked scabbard, and excellent overall condition make it a standout example of late 19th century Scandinavian military edged weaponry.
