Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. Dating from the 19th century, this is a most unusual Dutch Colonial native Klewang Sword, dating from the early 1800s. These originate from the Dutch and British East Indies, now known as Indonesia, Malaysia, and various other island countries.
The sword is 21 1/2 inches in overall length, and mounted with an 15 1/2 inch slim steel blade. The blade is made from high nickel content iron, often found in meteorite iron, giving a unique finish known as "pamor". The iron was crucible forged, much like wootz steel, giving it a lovely laminated appearance. Interestingly, the straight side of the blade has the edge, while the curved side is the spine.
The wooden hilt is carved the shape of a Sea monster, though it is missing a chunk at the end. The cross guard and grip are sheet silver, with some nice embossing on the grip. The klewang comes complete in a silver-covered wooden scabbard, which has some lovely floral embossed designs at the top and bottom of both sides.
A great example of an East Indies sword, fully decorated and ready to display!
