Original Item. Only One Available. This is a fantastic original Cold War-era British Army Regimental side drum from one of the most famous elite airborne units in military history, The Parachute Regiment. Carrying the proud battle honors earned during the Second World War, this drum represents the traditions and fighting legacy of the British airborne forces from their legendary WWII operations through the conflicts of the Cold War era.
This beautifully painted Regimental snare side drum was manufactured by DALLAS of England and bears the British Broad Arrow military acceptance stamp above the maker’s mark dated 1961. The body of the drum is finished in a deep Parachute Regiment purple scarlet color scheme, decorated with the regiment’s famous insignia and WWII battle honors highlighted in gold, black, and green. The drum is not marked to a specific battalion, but it was unquestionably produced for The Parachute Regiment.
The battle honors include:
BRUNEVAL
NORMANDY LANDING
BREVILLE
ARNHEM 1944
RHINE
SOUTHERN FRANCE
OUDNA
TAMERRA
PRIMOSOLE BRIDGE
ATHENS
These honors commemorate some of the most celebrated airborne actions of WWII, including the daring Bruneval Raid, the Normandy airborne operations, the bitter fighting at Arnhem during Operation Market Garden, the Rhine crossing, and the regiment’s campaigns throughout Europe and the Mediterranean.
The famous motto beneath the parachute badge reads UTRINQUE PARATUS, Latin for “Ready for Anything,” perfectly capturing the spirit and reputation of Britain’s airborne soldiers.
The drum displays heavy service wear, scratching, and finish loss from age and use, with some of the battle honors now difficult to read. This honest wear adds greatly to its character as a genuine military artifact that represents decades of regimental tradition rather than a modern ceremonial reproduction.
The drum measures approximately 15½ inches tall and 15 inches in diameter.
The bare brass side is stamped:
1961
(BROAD ARROW)
DALLAS
MADE IN ENGLAND
Dating from 1961, this drum comes from a fascinating period in British military history and would have been in service during the Cold War years when The Parachute Regiment was involved in major post-war operations, including the Kuwait, Aden, and Malaysia conflicts, as well as the conflicts in Northern Ireland during the 1970s.
The British Army maintains a Corps of Drums within each infantry battalion except Scottish, Irish, and Rifle Regiments (The Rifles and the Royal Gurkha Rifles), which traditionally maintain pipes and drums or bugles respectively. Each battalion of a line infantry regiment maintains its own Corps of Drums, which may be “massed” together for major ceremonial occasions.
All Corps-of-Drums soldiers are referred to as Drummers (Dmr) regardless of the instrument played, similar to the use of the term “Sapper” within the Royal Engineers. Unlike army musicians who serve primarily within military bands and are often limited to auxiliary wartime duties, members of a Corps of Drums are first and foremost fully trained infantry soldiers. Recruitment comes after standard infantry training, and a Corps of Drums deploys alongside the battalion, often forming specialist platoons such as assault pioneers, supporting fire, or force protection roles.
Historically, drums were a vital battlefield communication tool used to transmit orders during combat, making the Corps of Drums an essential part of infantry organization. Even after the bugle became the primary instrument for battlefield commands, drummers continued to preserve these historic traditions while remaining active soldiers.
A wonderful and highly displayable original Parachute Regiment drum representing the airborne tradition from WWII through the Cold War era. Still fully functional and ready for further research and display, this is an impressive artifact from one of Britain’s most respected fighting formations.
