Item Description
Original Item: One of a kind. Here we have a most beautifully constructed Italian oval mouth Barrel Blunderbuss, with a lock clearly marked MARTINONI under the flash pan. This particular style is often called an "Assassino di lupe", which translates to "Wolf Killer". Overall it is in really nice condition, and is a beautiful example. It has a lovely figured wood stock, with silver wire inlay on the top side, as well as carving around the mounts.
The blunderbuss features a 22 inch long part octagon iron barrel with an oval mouth, decorated with what may be inlaid gold designs. There is a mother of pearl escutcheon plate on the back of the wrist next to the iron release button for the stock joint. When pressed down, this releases the hinged stock, shortening the weapon to 27 inches. When the butt is fixed in place, the overall length is 35 inches.
The condition is very good, especially for being over 250 years in age. The lock action is tight and works perfectly, holding at half cock and firing at full. The stock has a lovely glow, and the only repair we can see is a small restored area on the right side next to the butt plate. The silver wire inlay is still retained at over 60%, and the fittings are simply beautiful. The folding latch and hinge are a bit loose due to wear.
I truly lovely weapon, ideal for coach traveling or concealment under one's overcoat. A most attractive Italian flintlock Blunderbuss with a very rare folding stock. Very nice and ready to display!
