Original 18th Century English Queen Anne Flintlock Pistol with Screw Off Barrel & Grotesque Butt Cap - Circa 1750
Item Description
Original Item: Only one available. This is very rare "Queen Anne" style flintlock pistol, with some fantastic decorative brass fittings. The butt cap has a lovely embossed grotesque mask, and there is a brass side plate showing flags and stands of arms. There is even a lovely escutcheon on the back of the grip, which would often be personalized.
The pistol does not have any maker marks on it, but that is not uncommon for bespoke pieces such as this. There are markings on the bottom of the breech, which are the CROWN / P proof and CROWN / V "viewed" markings from the London Proof house. The pistol has some line engraving around the lock, with some more intricate designs circling the breech of the barrel and on the barrel tang.
The pistol measures 11 1/2 inches in overall length, with a 5 1/4 inch screw off cannon barrel, in the typical "Queen Anne" style. The bottom of the barrel and the frame are both marked with the number 2, so they could be matched back up, which also indicates that this pistol was probably originally part of a set of two. The pistol has an iron trigger guard, and there is no provision for a ramrod, not needed if it had a removable barrel. The butt grip is lovely, and has some carving around the barrel tang, which shows a seashell design. There are no cracks or other damage we can see in the wood.
Condition is very nice, with a lovely patina. Most of the engraving is still clear, and really adds to the piece, as do the lovely brass decorations. The lock functions correctly, holding at half cock and firing at full.
A truly lovely "Queen Anne" flintlock pistol in fine Collector's condition ready to display!
