Original 1854 German Cased Percussion Sporting Gun by E.A. Störmer with Two Double Barrel Assemblies and Accessories

Item Description

Original item: One-of-a-kind. Fully cased in a fabulous wood case this is a great mid 19th century double barrel sporting gun, complete with every imaginable accessory, and probably a few we can't imagine, much less name. To have every possible option available to the discerning well-to-do hunter, this sporting gun comes with TWO spiral forged Damascus steel double barrel assemblies, easily changed by pulling out the barrel wedge. One double barrel assembly is smoothbored on both sides, and is in approximately 18 bore. The other is a combination smoothbore and rifled barrel assembly, both around 15mm, or 22 bore. The bottoms of the barrels are covered in proofs and specifications, which unfortunately we are not able to decipher.

This wonderful double barreled sporting gun was manufactured by E.A. STÖRMER of HERZBERG, as marked on the rifle’s side plates. At the time, that would have been located in the Kingdom of Saxony, later part of the German Empire. The locks are highly decorated, each covered with engraving and hunting motifs. The hammers themselves are engraved to look like the heads of hunting hounds on the ends! Both locks function correctly, holding at half cock, and firing at full. They also have levers in front of each hammer, which could be safeties, or just to keep the pressure off of the cap nipples, which could deform them. The very bottom of the butt plate has the date 1854, which we assume is the year of production. From what we can find out about the maker, this would be the correct time frame.

The rifle is beautifully housed in the original case, which measures 32 ½” x 10” x 3 5/8”, and is lined with green fabric. There are compartments for the stock of the gun, as well as components for each barrel, as well as loading and cleaning rods for each underneath. There are also many other compartments, both open and lidded, which contain a multitude of accessories. These include powder flasks, solvents, cleaning tools, molds, a cap container, a sling, and of course the all important KEY to the case! Many of the items we are not even able to recognize. The inside lid of the case has a label in German script that gives what we assume is the maker of the case, or possibly information about the gun.

Along with the set comes a larger transit chest for the case, which measures 36 12"L x 12 1/2"W x  5 1/4", which has even more markings in German on the inside of the lid. We unfortunately have not been able to decipher these.

Condition of the gun and barrels is excellent, with the only real issue being a small crack in the stock by the left barrel, which could easily be repaired. The metalwork has a lovely glow, as does the stock. All of the accessories look to be original and used, with a lovely patina. It really looks like this has been lovingly cared for during the past 150+ years.

An incredible Cased German Hunting gun, with two sets of barrels and lots of accessories. Ready to research and cherish for years to come!
