Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The Mutti family of Brescia in Italy were well known gunmakers in 17th-18th Century Italy, including Sperandio, Pietro, and others. This fine Long flintlock horse pistol was made by Pietro Mutti in Brescia, and the style is typical of around 1690. The top of the upper barrel is marked *PIETRO *MVTTI in a brass insert, and the rest of the fittings are all of brass as well.
The pistol is quite slender, measuring 20 inches in overall length, with a 14 1/2 inch 0.51" bore barrel. It has a 4 3/4" long hook on the left hand side, which was used to attach the pistol to the belt or trousers, very handy when riding on horseback. The lock does not have a makers name, but it does have a very nice engraved brass inlay. The rest of the lock is engraved as well, as are almost all of the brass fittings. The rear of the grip features a nice escutcheon, which has the image of a woman in the middle.
Condition of the the pistol is very good, though it does show age. The wood has shrunken a bit, so many of the fittings are a bit loose. The lock functions, but it will fire at half cock with a strong trigger pull. It has what looks to be the original iron ramrod still installed, but there is a crack partway through near the end.
A lovely long Italian Horse Pistol, already over 300 years of age. Ready to display!
