Original 17th Century German Engraved Wild Boar Hunting Bayonet with Brass Socket c. 1690

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a lovely late 17th Century German Socket Bayonet, intended for hunting Wild Boar, as was a common practice. It measures 14 1/2" in overall length, with a very sturdy 10" iron blade. The socket diameter is approximately 7/8". The basic idea was that once the the single shot hunting gun was discharged, having a raging wild boar charging you was always a terrifying possibility, so these hunting knife style bayonets provided some "at a distance" protection.
This is a classic example and dates from about 1690. This style is the typical German late 17th century style. The blade bolster has some lovely engraving, and the brass socket is engraved as well. There is a lovely "Grotesque Mask" where the brass socket joints the iron blade.
Condition is very good, with a lovely patina. There is a crack around the bayonet channel on the socket, somewhat expected due to brass being less strong than steel. Very lovely, and sure to make a fine addition to any collection.
