New Made Reproduction Items. Very Few Available. These are high-quality European-made reproductions of the liner retaining split pins used on Imperial German WWI M16 and M17 Stahlhelm helmets. They reproduce the three-pin arrangement used to secure the helmet’s liner band to the steel shell and are well suited for restoration projects, reenactor helmets, or incomplete original examples.
Each set consists of three splits pins, two of which are thinner, meant for the front two holes, and the third of which is thicker, meant for the rear hole. They have a good look to them and are not glossy or painted, so they will not detract too much from an original helmet.
The original M16 Stahlhelm used a thick leather liner band secured to the shell by three split-prong fasteners. In 1917, shortages of leather led to the introduction of a sheet-metal liner band, producing what collectors generally call the M17. The three-point liner attachment arrangement continued with this revised system.
They are suitable primarily for M16 and M17 Stahlhelm liner installations. M18 helmets retained the three-point liner attachment arrangement, although the M18 incorporated other construction changes, most notably moving the chinstrap attachment from the shell-mounted M1891 posts to the liner assembly.
These are an excellent choice for completing an Imperial German WWI Stahlhelm whose original liner pins are missing, damaged, or no longer suitable for reuse, or for a reproduction helmet which is missing pins.
