This is an exceptional high-quality reproduction 15th-century lashed munition crossbow manufactured by Tod’s Workshop in the United Kingdom, accompanied by its correct goat’s-foot spanning lever and three bolts. Tod’s Workshop specializes in historically researched reproductions of medieval arms and equipment, and this model is based upon the relatively plain, robust military crossbows produced for practical service rather than highly ornamented sporting or presentation weapons. These are very expensive crossbows, costing roughly $1,700 USD to have made before accounting for overseas shipping.
This medieval crossbow is typical of many 15th century munition-quality war crossbows so it is plain and rather blocky. Bow irons came in around the year 1400, though lashing was also still used and so this bow, like the majority, is lashed. This medieval crossbow is 350lbs in draw weight, and comes with a goats foot lever and 3 bolts.
The drawstring is designed and was constructed with the correct 15th century methods. We were able to use the spanner to cock the crossbow, though we did not attempt to fire any of the bolts. Two of the bolts have feather fletching and one has wood.
Tod’s dates the use of the goat’s-foot lever from approximately the 14th century onward and rates the general system as suitable for crossbows of substantial draw weight. Historical surviving examples are also known from the late 15th and early 16th centuries.
The crossbow measures 33 ⅞” long including the cocking stirrup, and the lath has a span of 24½”.
The combination of the 350 lb draw weight, traditional lashed bow construction, waxed linen string, substantial ash stock, removable goat’s-foot spanning lever, and three accompanying bolts makes this a particularly substantial modern interpretation of the working military crossbow of the 15th century. Its restrained construction is historically appropriate to the munition-quality concept, where durability and battlefield utility took precedence over the elaborate decoration found on higher-status hunting and sporting crossbows.
