  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is an original German NSDAP political Ärmelbinde, or Kampfbinde, of attractive multi-piece textile construction. The armband is formed from a red wool-felt body with a separately applied white rayon roundel at center. The black canted swas. is itself assembled from ribbed black rayon strips, carefully joined to form the central emblem. The white roundel is machine stitched around its perimeter, with the corresponding stitching clearly present on the interior. The armband is sewn closed into a continuous band for wear on the upper left sleeve.

Laid flat, the armband measures approximately 21.8 cm x 11.7 cm (8 9/16 in x 4 5/8 in). No manufacturer or RZM marking could be found.

Condition is very good overall, with light age and storage wear throughout. The red wool retains strong coloration with scattered surface fibers, minor rubbing, and localized discoloration. The white rayon roundel shows mild age toning and light soiling, while the black rayon emblem remains complete and sharply defined, with slight fraying at several exposed edges. The principal stitching remains intact and the armband retains a strong overall appearance.

    Historical Context
The red, white, and black armband was one of the principal identifying insignia of the NSDAP and reproduced the central design of the Party flag in a form intended for wear on the uniform. The Party formally adopted the canted swas. as its emblem in 1920, placing the black device within a white circular field against a red background. The same combination became one of the most recognizable visual symbols of the movement during the Weimar period and continued in extensive official use after the NSDAP came to power in 1933.

Known in period terminology as the Kampfbinde, the armband was worn on the upper left sleeve and provided an immediately visible indication of Party or organizational affiliation. It was associated particularly closely with the brown-shirt uniform and subsequently appeared with the regulated uniforms of the NSDAP Political Leadership Corps and a number of Party organizations. The basic red band with its white disk and black emblem therefore formed an important part of the visual uniform system that the Party developed during the 1920s and 1930s.

The NSDAP Political Organization itself was arranged territorially through increasingly larger administrative levels, including the Ortsgruppe or local group, Kreis or district, Gau or region, and the central Reichsleitung. Political Leaders serving within this structure wore regulated uniforms and insignia intended to identify both rank and function. The armband was especially important within this system because its position on the sleeve made it readily recognizable during Party service, public ceremonies, rallies, and organized formations.

During the later 1930s the Political Leader uniform system became increasingly elaborate. Armbands assigned to officeholders could incorporate additional colored piping, metallic braid, or positional insignia identifying the wearer's function and organizational level. The plain red-white-black form remained the fundamental Party armband design from which these more elaborate Political Leader insignia developed.

The emblem also acquired a dual political and state significance after 1933. The swas. flag was ordered flown alongside the black-white-red Imperial colors in March 1933, and in September 1935 it became the sole national flag of the German Reich. The visual arrangement already familiar from Party flags and armbands consequently became ubiquitous throughout public life, appearing on government buildings, uniforms, banners, signs, printed propaganda, and mass political displays.
