British Government Issue Blunderbuss by J.Richards c.1770

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fascinating Iron Barreled Blunderbuss measuring 28" overall with gracefully swamped 14" barrel. Complete with brass mounts and brass tipped ram rod, the lock is Crown over G.R. marked and inscribed "J.Richards" across lock tail. The Iron Barrel is also marked "J. Richards" with "Strand, London" and bears correct London Proof markings of the time. Also on the barrel are the initials "I.R.S." representing " INLAND REVENUE SERVICE" which shows that even 240 years ago the common man was subject to Government greed and taxation. In fact a subject the American Colonies were making an issue of at that very time! So this was a Tax Man's Blunderbuss, presumably for slow or defaulting payers. Offered in nice tight condition, a delicate and graceful blunderbuss from the time of the Revolutionary War.
