Original Imperial Japanese WWII Hand Cranked Air Raid Siren by Yahagi - Fully Functional

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a rare fully functional Japanese WWII hand-cranked air raid siren, which would usually be attached to some sort of stand. There are two bolts on the rear for attaching to a mount, but no mount is included. It is definitely larger than the hand held type, and has a large nozzle on the front to help with sound projection. It looks to be made mostly of what appears to be aluminum, or some other non ferrous alloy. There is a slightly oxidized patina on the outside, giving it a great look.

There is a data plate above the steel crank handle, which we have been able to read the top two lines of:

東京
矢荻式 サイレン

The top line are the characters for the city "Tokyo", the capital of modern Japan, and the second line reads "Yahagi Type SAIREN", which partly uses the Japanese Katakana phonetic alphabet. "Sairen" of course means that it is a Siren, and it works exactly as it should. The crank is fully operational, spinning the internal rotor, and there is a spring loaded lever to adjust the damper, though it sticks a bit when returning to the open position.

The siren is approximately 6 inches wide and 8 inches long, not counting the crank handle, which is around 5 1/2 inches long and sticks out 4 1/2 inches from the rear of the siren.

Offered in complete and very good condition. These were used during the Air Raids over Tokyo and other major Japanese cities towards the end of World War Two.
