Original U.S. WWI 2nd Army Air Service Mechanic’s Painted Helmet and Uniform Coat

Item Description

Original Items: Only Ones Available. An original set once belonging to an enlisted aviation mechanic who served with an Aviation Section attached to the 2nd Army during WWI. The set features a complete M-1917 Helmet with painted insignia and a Private Purchase M-1912 Coat with full insignia and a French Made Shoulder Sleeve Insignia.

The Helmet is a U.S. Made M-1917 helmet which features a Red/White/Blue Air Service Roundel with the Letters “A.S.M” painted in Red, White, Blue. The helmet features original textured paint, with complete liner and unbroken chinstrap. The helmet even has its original instruction label affixed inside the liner. The helmet is heat lot number marked ZG53, indicating that it is of American manufacture. The liner is size marked 7 ¼ .

The Tunic with the group is of a private purchase variety being made of a finer, and lighter grade, wool than the standard issue example. The Coat features a beautiful French-Made 2nd Army Air Service Shoulder Sleeve Insignia with chain stitched Roundel. The left sleeve also has a discharge stripe and overseas chevron denoting six months overseas. The right sleeve has an aviation private first class device affixed to the upper sleeve. The collar features a US Device and a Winged Propeller Device. The coat, overall, is in good condition, with a few moth holes here and there and showing signs of honest period use and storage.
