Original U.S. WWII Named Airborne Medic 82nd Airborne Division 307th Airborne Medical Company Ike Jacket Uniform Set

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The 307th Sanitary Train was constituted on 5 August 1917 and assigned to the 82d Division. Having been demobilized 9 May 1919 (after WW1), the 307th was reconstituted on 24 November 1936 as part of the Organized Reserves, and reassigned to the 82d (Infantry) Division. It was to be consolidated with the 307th Medical Regiment. In October 1941, the unit was transferred to Jacksonville, Florida; and on 30 January 1942, it was redesignated the 307th Medical Battalion.

The Battalion was activated 25 March 1942 and sent to Camp Claiborne, Alexandria, Louisiana (Engineer Unit Training Center & Infantry Division Camp) as part of the 82d Infantry Division. With the conversion of the 82d Infantry Division into an Airborne organization, the Battalion’s Headquarters & Headquarters Company was however once more reorganized and redesignated as the 307th Airborne Medical Company. The Company was finally reactivated as the 307th Airborne Medical Company on 15 August 1942, under command of Major Wolcott L. Etienne, as an organic unit of the 82d Airborne Division.

This fantastic uniform set is named to Technician 3rd Grade H. R. Temple who initially served as a Medic with the 307th Airborne Medical Company under command of the 82nd Airborne Division, more than likely before, during and after the Normandy Invasion. Unfortunately we have not been able to locate any service record information, making for a wonderful research opportunity.

The Ike jacket is a wonderful example of a “dual unit” insignia uniform. The Shoulder Sleeve Insignia that is worn on the left shoulder represents the service member’s current unit, which in this case is the 17th Airborne Division, while the right shoulder is reserved for the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia — Former Wartime Service (SSI-FWTS), also known as the Combat patch, which in this case is the 82nd Airborne Division. The SSI-FWTS is a military patch that should be worn with pride as it shows that the soldier put their life on the line to protect their country in a combat zone. Army combat patches are only awarded to those who were in active combat operations and include the insignia of the unit that the soldier served in combat with, a practice still seen today in the US Army.

Also featured on the ike jacket is a wonderful Glider Badge on a white felt backing with maroon border, signifying the 307th Medical Company. Above and below the Glider Badge is the Presidential Unit Citation, Army Good Conduct, EAME (W/ Bronze Arrowhead and x2 Stars) and last a Combat Medical Badge. The Combat Medical Badge is an award of the United States Army which was first created in January 1945. Any member of the Army Medical Department, at the rank of colonel or below, who is assigned or attached to a ground combat arms unit of brigade or smaller size which provides medical support during any period in which the unit was engaged in ground combat is eligible for the CMB. According to the award criterion, the individual must be performing medical duties while simultaneously being engaged by the enemy.

Included with the Ike jacket are a pair of pants, similar in condition to the jacket itself which is close to excellent!

Comes more than ready for further research and display.
