  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is the uniform and research grouping of USMC Major John Prentice Murphy, H&S Co, 18th Marines (Engr), 2nd Marine Division, FMF. Murphy served as Construction Officer and Platoon Leader of a Construction Platoon.

Murphy’s uniform has a 2nd Marine Division patch on the left shoulder, Major rank insignia on each shoulder board, and EGA collar insignia. There is a four-place ribbon bar over the left breast pocket with the Navy Presidential Unit Citation with a star, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal with four campaign stars, and the WWII Victory Medal. The interior shows moderate wear, and the name J.P. MURPHY is stamped in the interior right shoulder. The jacket appears to be private purchase, which makes sense for an officer.

The included trousers are in good shape and also appear private purchase. The trousers have a tag for Fred Zinner of San Francisco, named J.P. MURPHY with a date of July 1942.

Included with the set is a folder with over 100+ pages of printed research found in the national archives. Tons of fitness reports, official documents, discharges, promotions, and much more than outlines much of Murphy’s service. According to the documents, Murphy participated in the Battle of Saipan from June 15th to July 9th, 1944, and Tinian from July 24th to August 1st, 1944.

A great identified Marine Officer’s uniform, ready for further research and display!
