Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is a wondeful set that once belonged to Technician 5th Grade Samuel W. Dougan, who served with the 59th/108th Evacuation Hospitals as well as the 204th Military Police Company of the 2629th MP Battalion. The lot consists of (3) items; “Invasion” Armband, Red Cross Armband and a service diary that is filled with a vast amount of service information, including a “travel” timeline!
The American Flag Oilcloth armband was more commonly seen on the European Fronts, especially during the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France. This is the third type of Arm flag, which was printed as an armband on a kind of sturdy paper stock resembling wallpaper, called oilcloth. This is a semi-waterproof material also called "lacquered cloth" and "American Cloth". It has punch holes and originally came with two safety pins, both of which are not present. This armband actually has the location/operation in which it was used written on the inside. It states that it was for the “Invasion N. Africa / Nov. 1942 / Casablanca”. The armband is in wonderful condition with signs of faithful wear. The Red Cross armband does have Dougan’s name written on it and must have been worn during his time serving with the Evacuation Hospitals.
Lastly is the real “meat and potatoes” of the lot, a diary of service. The diary was presented by Dougan’s mother in Christmas of 1943. The first few pages are his service information, a newspaper clipping and an original photo of him.
