Original Item: One-of-a-Kind. This is an absolutely beautiful World War Two American painted A-2 flight jacket. While we were unable to find a name or service number, there is however an enlisted man’s laundry number; G-5531.
The A-2 jacket, which is in very nice condition with fantastic hand painted insignia. The left chest features incredibly painted leather patch for the 346th Bomb Squadron with 21 small bombs painted signifying mission count. The colors are retained on the patch well enough to identify it, however there is paint loss and cracking present. To note, there is evidence of another squadron patch having been sewn on before the current patch. Not to worry, this is a common encounter as crews often switched squadrons during the course of the war.
The back side of the jacket has a large B-17 Aircraft named “JEANNE” flying through flak clouds. In each cloud there appears to be a name from missions such as Vienna and Linz, with the others being difficult to read.
Jacket is in size US 44 and has retained all period original components including original knit waist band (period replacement) and sleeve cuffs, something we often see replaced on A-2 jackets that saw extensive service. Also original is the TALON brand zipper which is functional.
The interior lining does have extensive tearing and stitching loss present, so do handle it with care. The top rear back portion of the liner still retains the original tag though it is difficult to read and only partially legible:
