Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice genuine WWII U.S. Army M4 Carbine bayonet fighting knife, with an original M8 scabbard. Nicely marked U.S. M4 / UTICA on the blade side of the hand guard for the Utica Cutlery Co., next to the U.S. Ordnance "Flaming Bomb". The blade is in good condition, and does not look to have seen much use during the war. It has a slightly worn gray patina, and we do not see any signs of post manufacture sharpening. The crossguard, handle, and pommel are all tight to the blade.
The bayonet has a molded rubber handle instead of the stacked leather. Solid information on these types of handles are rather scant with the little information present are only assumptions made. Although there has been a general assumption that they were done to replace leather handles which were deteriorating due to the dampness of the tropical environment and then re-issued for use during the Korean War. The pommel is held on by the correct peened over tang, but is without the Ordnance Flaming Bomb marking on the lock plate, indicating that it may have also been replaced when the handle was. Known examples of these bayonets with molded rubber grips often lack the Flaming Bomb marking on the lock plate as they were usually replaced.
It comes in a nice WWII issue OD green thermoplastic impregnated cotton fabric scabbard marked U.S. M8 / B.M. CO., also offered in very good condition. There is some wear to the scabbard, but it still has almost all of the original green paint. The throat shows light surface oxidation, as shown. The canvas is in very good condition, and the snap still functions, though the finish is worn. The OD Green #7 color and lack of a bottom reinforcement indicates late WWII manufacture. The scabbard was manufactured by Beckwith Mfg Co., a division of Victory Plastics, whose VP logo is on the back of the scabbard body.
