Original U.S. Civil War Model 1852 Officer’s Sword with Triple Etched French Blade by Klingenthal and Leather Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available: This is a complete example of a U.S. Navy Model 1852 Officer’s Sword, the blade being manufactured at Manuf're a Klingenthal, as marked on the spine. This was the former location of the first Royal Weapons Factory in France. While it lost the "Royal Manufactory" status in 1838, it continued to produce edged weapons continuously until the mid 20th century. This particular sword features a triple-etched French blade, hand engraved designs, a sharkskin-Wrapped Grip, and leather scabbard.

The Guard is solid cast brass, with a high degree of hand finishing work. The guard is partially filigreed with engraved embellishments on some of the relief areas of the casting work. The original wire wrap which encompasses the sharkskin wrapping is fully intact and tight. Overall, the sword is nice and tight, with only the slightest wobble at the guard. The sword is in very good condition, with a lovely blade that has very little wear or oxidation whatsoever. The all brass handle has a lovely worn patina, with no damage or bending.

The scabbard is in complete but rough condition with the leather being cracked and torn in a couple spots. The brass fittings are all intact but they are all loose, and the leather between them all is very fragile. It is recommended to take extreme care when handling and removing the scabbard and only doing so when necessary. The leather has a weak point above the drag and flexes on its own. When removing the sword from the scabbard use EXTREME CAUTION AND CARE. It definitely looks like the scabbard has had several past repairs, and the leather has also shrunk, so it does not fit fully over the blade anymore.

This is an exceptional sword. If one is looking to purchase a good representative example of a Civil War Navy Officer’s Sword, this would make a prime example! Ready for display!

1852 Navy Officer’s Sword
The Model 1852 Naval Officers Sword was a sword produced for the United States Navy, which entered service in 1852 and was in use during the American Civil War. It was the same style used by officers of the United States Revenue Cutter Service. The requirement for US Navy officers to have swords was suspended during World War II.

The Coast Guard Officers' Sword, used by the United States Coast Guard, is almost identical to the Model 1852 Naval Officers Sword. The only difference is that the Coast Guard Officers' Sword has US Coast Guard inscribed on it instead of US Navy. It is of similar style as the officers sword used by the United States Revenue Cutter Service, the predecessor of the Coast Guard. The sword was created in the aftermath of the first regulations on sidearms for military personnel. Previously, the swords used by the coast guard were either navy swords or a personal preference.

Model 1852 swords produced before and during the American Civil War had a blade approximately 1 inch wide and were slightly curved. By 1870 the blade width was reduced to about 3/4 of an inch and in the early 20th century the swords were made straight.
