Original U.S. 1960s Extreme Velocity 20mm Fuze Military Test Round Made With Modified WWII 40mm Casing

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Totally inert and demilitarized according to BATF guidelines with hollow body and inert fuses. This is a display piece and is not filled with any explosive content, nor can it be converted into an explosive device.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

This is a very rare and interesting U.S. Military test round from the 1960s, intended for extreme velocity 20mm fuze testing, which would be over 5,300 feet per second. To achieve this an extremely large load of propellant was used, which is why the 20mm projectile is mated with a 40mm shell. The copper driving band on the projectile is marked SPEC TEST 101, which could be a great avenue for further research.

The shell casing used looks to 40mm BOFORS casing that has been drawn and necked down to 20mm, and it still has the original WWII markings on the bottom:

40 MM MK.2  MM 8 1944

GMS LOT 6

Overall condition is very good, with a lovely aged patina. The test around measures approximately 15 inches in overall length.
