Original U.S. WWII M1942 Paratrooper Jump Jacket with Period Applied 82nd Airborne Division Shoulder Sleeve Insignia - Laundry Number Marked (Q9716)

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This Original M1942 Airborne Jump jacket in Olive Drab #3 is available in very good, used condition. The jacket is made of a high quality cotton material that was durable and comfortable to wear. The jacket features four front patch pockets with two button snaps on each top flap, arranged in 2 rows to secure different sized items. The pockets are designed to hold a variety of items such as maps, compasses, and other essential gear that paratroopers may have needed during their missions.

The jacket also has a dual-zippered knife pocket on the upper lapel, which is a unique feature of the M42 jacket. The pocket is designed to hold a switchblade pocketknife used to cut the parachute rigging if entangled. This feature demonstrates the practicality and functionality of the M42 jacket in the field.

The top two pockets are angled inward to make items easier to retrieve with the opposite hand, which is a thoughtful design feature that enhances the functionality of the jacket. The jacket does not have a flag patch, but it does have a period-applied 82nd Airborne Division insignia that is original to the uniform. This insignia is a symbol of pride and honor for the paratroopers who wore this jacket during their service.

The jacket is in very good condition, with expected stains and small pulls from service. It shows signs of having been faithfully service-worn, with staining present and an overall appearance of fading, but not showing intentional abuse. The original belt and CONMAR brand zippers are present, which is a testament to the quality and durability of the M42 jacket.

The M1942 pattern was often reinforced with thicker, tougher canvas on the elbows, crotch, and knees due to the uniform's fragile nature. However, this example was never reinforced, indicating early issue. This detail adds historical significance to the jacket and makes it a valuable piece of military memorabilia.

The M42 jacket was worn by Paratroops assigned to Airborne units and became an iconic symbol of the US military during World War II. It was eventually phased out in favor of the M1943 Uniform, which was a darker green, OD #7. Despite this, various individuals chose to keep their M42s to show their veteran status, and the M42 remains a beloved piece of military history.

This is a wonderful example of a very hard to find early configuration jump jacket, in great shape. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
