Original U.S. Indian Wars Era Model 1860 Army Staff and Field Officer Sword with Engraved Blade

Item Description

Original Item: One Of A Kind: This particular sword, identified as an M1860, was crafted by one of many made by the Springfield Armory during the Civil War era up until the early 1900s.

Although it is an edged weapon, this post-war version of the M1860 sword was primarily intended for use in ceremonies. The blade, measuring 31 inches in length, is straight, double-edged, and has a diamond-shaped cross-section. The blade is adorned on both sides with etched foliate and a military panoply of arms. While the blade is mostly semi-bright, there are some age discoloration spots and oxidation, particularly towards the bottom.

The Sword hilt is brass, with the handle having a leather wrapped wood handle with the wire wrap still present. Steel scabbard has a pleasing, dark gray/brown patina and is adorned with two brass mounts and a brass drag; the brass throat is still present. Both mounts exhibit a floral display. The top mount sports two rings while the lower mount has only one.

The brass drag features a bold star on one side and a set of draped flags on the other. Both sword mounts and the drag are tight. Some of the plating is still present on the scabbard and there are no dents or damage present that we can see other than heavy surface rust.

This is a very handsome sword which is a must have for the collector of 19th Century U.S. Militaria.
