Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This an incredible service worn condition example of a WWII German Kriegsmarine Navy Admiral Rank Command Flag, officially termed the Admiralflagge in German. The flag looks to be of wool construction, with a canvas header, which unfortunately has faded so that the markings are no longer legible. We however think we can make out a very faint Eagle / M Kriegsmarine acceptance marking. It is approximately 1 x 1 meters in size, having stretched a bit lengthwise. The design features an Admiral's cross pattée with no additional dots or devices.

These flags were standard equipment on the larger capital ships, and were hoisted whenever an Admiral was on board. This rank, equivalent of the U.S. Navy's Admiral, was considered a "flag officer", which was any Navy officer of high enough rank to fly a flag from the location of their command. This also meant that the ships would need to keep a full set on board for ranks of Konteradmiral (Counter Admiral) upwards, to match the rank.

This example is in very good condition, and still has a complete halyard sewn into the header, with a loop on top and about 30 inches below, which looks to be tied in a "bowline" knot or similar fastening knot. The condition is definitely stained and wind worn, giving it a fantastic "been there" look. This is not a flag that spent the war in a depot!
