Original WWI U.S. Army Signal Corps Telegraph Operator Set - Model 1914 Service Buzzer by American Electric, Earphones & Pouch

Item Description

Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is a very set of WWI U.S. Army Signal Corps issue communication items, which would have been issued to field telegraph operators. These were essential an means of communication during WWI and even into the WWII Era. The Signal Corps were responsible for establishing communications both behind and in front of our combat lines. They mostly used Morse code along with several other types of codes for security reasons.

The centerpiece of the set is a U.S. Army Signal Corps Model 1914 Service Buzzer, which is still contained in its original leather case, which measures 7"W x 5"D x 3 1/2"H. The top of the leather case is embossed with information indicating the contents, which reads:

SERVICE BUZZER
SIGNAL CORPS U.S. ARMY
MODEL 1914

The inside of the lid also has the complete instructions as well as schematics for the unit, and still retains the original data plate, which reads:

American Electric Co.
Chicago
ORDER 7684   MAY 16, 1917

The Model 1914 was a bit different than standard buzzers, as it also had the ability to be used as a telephone as well, and there is a microphone and earpiece still included inside of the set, with complete wiring. The leather case even has a circular inlet area with soft leather so that the telegraph key can still be used while the case is closed! Definitely a very useful function while in the field. We have no idea if the unit is still functional, but with all the parts present, we do not see why it could not be returned to service if desired. It still has the original shoulder strap in very good condition.

The set of additional headphones are a pair of FROST PHONES NO. 161 1000 earphones, and they are definitely in service used condition, partly held together with electrical tape. These could be attached to the service buzzer at one of the additional terminals, so that multiple people could listen to the telegraph or telephone function.

The included leather pouch was probably for spare parts and short lengths of wire. It is marked S.W.CO. / 1918 / O.W.E., and in relatively good condition, though one of the buckles on the rear is missing and the leather is definitely stiff.

A lovely set of communications equipment from "The Great War", ready to display!
