Original Item: Only One Available. After WWI by 1919, all American warplanes had adopted new a new set of markings characterized by a white star on a blue disc with a bright red dot in the center. Aircraft tail flaps during this period were often painted with distinctive horizontal red and white stripes reminiscent of the U.S. flag – an all too flashy color scheme that was quickly discarded at the outset of America’s entry into the Second World War. All branches of the American military continued to use the star insignia on their aircraft until 1942, when the distinguishing center spot was discarded. It was feared that In the thick of air combat, any flash of red might falsely identify American planes as Japanese.
This is a fabric aircraft panel that features the red dot which means it was manufactured before 1942. We do not know what type of aircraft it was from but the reverse of the star is marked: MIGHTEX FABRICS CAA 150-C15.
The round panel is canvas and paint and measures 22 inches in diameter. Overall condition is good with typical age, a small tear to one point with vibrant paint colors. The paint is retained at 98%.
A wonderful eye catching piece of early war history for any militaria or aviation enthusiast.
