Original Southern Russian Black Sea Heavily Decorated Percussion Converted Carbine c. 1820

Item Description

Original item: One of a kind. Here we have a nice example of the typical carbine used in Southern Russia near the Black sea. It is in very nice "attic fresh" condition, and looks to have been hanging on a wall or something similar for quite some time. This carbine, which has a hanger ring on the left side, may have been used on horseback, or for another purpose where dropping it was a real possibility.

Originally made as a flintlock, as indicated by the additional holes and markings on the front of the lock plate. it is now in percussion, with an engraved hammer attached, matching the engraving on the cap bolster. The entire stock to the rear of the barrel is most attractively engraved with foliate and other motifs. The iron fittings are also all engraved.

Condition is as shown, which unfortunately shows quite a bit of age. The fore stock is missing any type of barrel band or other means or retaining the barrel, and there are some missing chunks and cracks at the front as shown. The barrel is missing a chunk at the muzzle, and has light oxidation over all. The lock is semi-functional, with an intact main spring, but it will not hold at cock. The butt stock area has fared much better, with minimal cracking or chunks missing, just overall wear from use and age.

A rare and very attrctive South Russian Percussion carbine, ready to restore or display as is!
