Original Item: Only One Available. This is a gorgeous Great War ‘Fore and Aft’ Bicorn chapeau bras collapsible hat for an officer in the Imperial German Navy, or Kaiserliche Marine, circa 1890-1918. Black beaver pelt with gilt wire and white Ostrich features around the brim. The name Tamke is written on the lining, but there is no maker mark.
The chapeau is in fantastic condition without any serious dents or damage, with the cockade still fully retained with its gilt and bullion, and a Kaiserliche Marine button. The leather sweatband is still very well-retained as well. The hat is roughly a size 7¼.
A chapeau bras is a type of hat made to be compressed and carried under the arm without injury. It translates literally as “hat arm.” Such hats were a popular style worn on dress occasions by gentlemen in the 18th century, but they were worn extensively into the 20th Century.
The hat comes in its original partial box with the bottom of the box close to breaking off, but it will make for a nice display.
This is a fantastic German Naval Chapeau, ready for further research and display.
