Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an excellent original U.S. WWII Women’s Army Corps uniform grouping associated with Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force, or SHAEF, consisting of a finely tailored uniform jacket, matching-style skirt bearing a TOUTMAIN / PARIS label, and a Knox of New York WAC overseas cap. There are also two SHAEF patches. The jacket carries a high-quality French-made SHAEF shoulder insignia and three appropriate WWII service ribbons, making this an especially attractive example of the privately or locally tailored uniforms worn by American servicewomen stationed in Europe.
The included jacket has a gorgeous French-made SHAEF patch with three ribbons over the left breast pocket, including the Army Good Conduct Medal, Women’s Army Corps Medal, and ETO Campaign Medal.
The jacket’s interior is a smooth silk/satin material and there are no retained contract or makers tags in the jacket. There is a two hook and loop closure at the bottom edge. This is certainly a foreign-tailored jacket.
The skirt has a retained but washed out tag reading:
TOUTMAIN
PARIS
Toutmain Paris was a historic Parisian fashion house and couturier active from the early 20th century through the 1960s, located at 26 Avenue des Champs-Élysées in Paris. This female WAC SHAEF uniform was tailored by Toutmain during the war.
The included overseas cap has green and yellow piping for WAC, and is maker-marked for KNOX of New York on the interior. There is a size tag reading 21. Also included with the set are two SHAEF patches on their own, a nice addition.
This grouping is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its French-made SHAEF insignia, Paris-tailored Toutmain skirt, European Theater ribbon group, Knox WAC overseas cap, and overall association with the comparatively small contingent of Women’s Army Corps personnel assigned to Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force during WWII. Although the wearer remains unidentified, the surviving tailoring, insignia, and decorations provide a strong material connection to American women serving at Allied headquarters in wartime Europe.
