  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good service-worn original WWII U.S. Marine Corps P44 Herringbone Twill Utility Coat, representing the late-war development of the Marine Corps field and work uniform. Constructed from the characteristic sage to olive-drab cotton herringbone twill, it retains its blackened metal U.S. Marine Corps buttons, flapped breast pocket, and stenciled USMC Eagle, Globe, and Anchor insignia.

The P44 was the second principal Marine Corps HBT utility-coat pattern of World War II, following the earlier P41.

The earlier P41 employed three exterior patch pockets without flaps, while the P44 introduced a very different pocket arrangement centered around a single flapped breast pocket and large internal or side-entry storage compartments incorporated into the front of the coat. Surviving original examples show this same construction together with blackened Marine Corps “doughnut-hole” buttons and the familiar USMC/EGA stencil on the breast pocket.

There is no size marking, but under the collar is the inscribed number 30604. There are some scattered holes in the HBT and some fraying. Four of the buttons are also missing from the front closure.

The combination of the original HBT construction, blackened Marine Corps buttons, flapped USMC/EGA breast pocket, under-collar number 30604, and honest field wear gives this coat considerable value as a representative example of the Marine Corps’ late-WWII utility uniform system. Its condition reflects real use while preserving the principal construction details that distinguish the P44 from the earlier P41 pattern.
