  • Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is the outstanding uniform & mission log of Marine Corps Corporal Robert V. Smith, 3rd Marine Air Wing. During the war, Smith served as aircrew member in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. The group includes his dress uniform, his “Mission log”, of which only the first two pages are filled out, and six photographs of Smith that were in the log.

Smith’s WWII Marine Corps dress blues uniform has 3rd Marine Air Wing patches on both shoulders, Corporal chevrons on both sleeves, and Marine Aerial Radio Operator diamond patches on each cuff. We found in one of Smith’s muster rolls that he was listed as a Radio Repairman, so this is likely what he did while in the air. There are EGA collar insignia, and on the left breast is a set of Sterling Marine Aircrew wings by Amico with three attached campaign stars over a two place ribbon bar with the Navy Presidential Unit Citation with star and the Asiatic Pacific campaign medal with two stars. Under this is an Expert Rifleman badge. The jacket is roughly a size 38 US. There is a nametag in the pocket reading Robert V. Smith by Brooks Uniform Co.

The matching trousers are also named to Smith and are by the same company, so this is a matching set.

Smith’s Mission log is only filled out on the first two pages, with “241 / Combat Casualties” at the top. There are entries from December 19th, 1944 until May 27th, 1945, with 8 entries total detailing the deaths of pilots and other Marine airmen during this period while flying with Marine Scout-Bombing Squadron 241.

There are also six photographs included of Smith in uniform, all pre-deployment.

This is an outstanding 3rd Marine Air Wing uniform group, ready for further research and display!
