The image was created by Henry Koerner to show the strength of the allied forces by emphasizing the fire power generated by the cannons with their various flags representing the countries of the Allied coalition. Henry Koerner (1915-1991) was a Jewish refugee who immigrated to the United States from Austria in 1938. Trained as a graphic designer, he immediately produced a number of U.S. propaganda poster before being drafted into the Graphics Division during WWII. The theme of a united alliance for victory was common and used frequently in war posters. This poster is a well-designed image of artillery barrels firing in unison with the identifying flags of the allied countries. Designed by artist Henry Koerner. As with Koerner's other poster, Save Waste Fats for Explosives, exploding energy effectively draws attention to the poster message.
Henry Koerner immigrated to the United States in 1938 from Vienna. He was a refugee from persecution of the Jews. In 1946 he returned to Vienna as an American soldier. Upon that return, he learned that his family had been deported and killed.
Posters during World War II were designed to instill in the people a positive outlook, a sense of patriotism and confidence. They linked the war in trenches with the war at home. From a practical point, they were used to encourage all Americans to help with the war effort. The posters called upon every man, woman, and child to endure the personal sacrifice and domestic adjustments to further the national agenda. They encouraged rationing, conservation and sacrifice. In addition, the posters were used for recruitment, productivity, and motivation as well as for financing the war effort. The stark, colorful graphic designs elicited strong emotions. The posters played to the fears, frustrations, and faith in freedoms that lingered in people's minds during the war.
This example comes ready to frame and display.
