  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very interesting aluminum frame variation of the U.S. Navy 37mm Coston-Sedgley Parachute Signal Pistol, manufactured by R.F. Sedgley, Inc. of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dating from World War II or the immediate postwar period, this early all metal example predates the later versions incorporating plastic components.

The Coston-Sedgley is a manually operated, single shot signal pistol with a hinged, break open barrel. The breech is opened using the latch positioned beneath the barrel, directly in front of the trigger. The pistol was manufactured without sights or a conventional trigger guard. It is fired by pulling back on the exposed trigger.

Construction consists of an aluminum pistol grip frame fitted with a steel barrel and breech assembly. The aluminum grip area has an integral checkered pattern, with a circled S emblem cast into both sides. A large securing screw is positioned at the rear of the frame, while the butt of the grip is fitted with a lanyard swivel. A selector lever button is located on the breech latch ahead of the trigger.

The left side of the aluminum frame is clearly marked:

    COSTON-SEDGLEY
    PARACHUTE SIGNAL PISTOL
    PAT. 1-13-31

The left side of the steel barrel is marked:

R.F. SEDGLEY INC. PHILA., PA., U.S.A.
    37MM

When the breech is opened, matching serial number 1889 is visible on both the barrel and frame. The matching numbers indicate that the principal components have remained together.

The pistol retains its complete firing pin, and the action operates correctly, although it is somewhat stiff. The steel barrel and breech assembly appear to have originally had a bright finish and were subsequently painted black to match the frame. The painted finish shows expected age and handling wear, but the pistol remains in excellent overall condition.

A very attractive early all metal example of the Coston-Sedgley Parachute Signal Pistol, complete with its aluminum frame, steel barrel and breech assembly, lanyard swivel, matching serial numbers, and intact firing mechanism.
