  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an outstanding example of something we have seen very few of before, a regimental flag or “colors”, designed for the 34th Anti-Aircraft Artillery. The 34th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade was activated in 1941, and it participated The 34th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Brigade. The brigade was commanded by Brigadier General Aaron Bradshaw Jr. during the Sicily campaign, and later by Brigadier General Joseph S. Robinson and Frank C. McConnell.

In the United States Army, most regiments, battalions of regiments, and separate battalions possess a stand of “colors.” The first is the National Color (i.e., the American flag) which is 36 inches by 48 inches in size trimmed with a 2.5 inch-wide gold fringe. The second is the Regimental, or Organizational, Color. The Regimental Color is the same size as the National Color. The background color of each varies with the branch of service for that regiment or battalion (e.g., blue for infantry, yellow for armor and cavalry, red for artillery, etc.) In the center of the Regimental Color is the eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, but with the shield of regiment’s coat of arms placed on the eagle’s breast, rather than that of the United States. The eagle has in its beak a scroll bearing the regimental motto. The crest of the regiment’s coat of arms is placed above the eagle’s head and the regiment’s name on a scroll below. The Regimental and Battalion Colors carry the various campaign participation credit streamers and awards streamers (such as Presidential Unit Citation) earned by the unit.

This example is red, for artillery, with the brigade’s motto, “Operational and Ready” on the scroll in the eagle’s beak. There is a Philadelphia Quartermaster tag in each end of the halyard, with the leather tabs intact as well though they show very heavy wear with material rubbing off. There is also some tearing along the halyard with holes in spots across the flag on both sides.

This heavily worn and torn regimental flag measures 35 ½ x 48” without fringe, with the fringe in great condition. This flag would look outstanding in a frame. Colors are incredibly difficult to find in any condition, and this example retains the embroidery work in outstanding condition.

Ready to become the centerpiece of any WWII collection!
