Original Items. Only One Set Available. This is an outstanding United States Marine Corps “Forest Green” P1917 uniform set worn by a Private serving in the Machine Gun Company of the 13th Marine Regiment, 5th Marine Brigade.
In the early 1900s, the Marine Corps added service uniforms for work and field use, replacing the “undress” uniform category used in the Civil War. The Marine Corps initially had both summer and winter service uniforms, but by the time the U.S. entered WWI, the Forest Green colored winter service uniform had become the standard field and combat uniform for both hot and cold climates.
This jacket bears a diamond-shaped patch on the left shoulder with an EGA and a red “V” inside, which is meant to denote the Machine Gun Company of the 13th Marine Regiment, 5th Brigade. The 13th Marines was formed on July 3, 1916, as an infantry regiment. Assigned to the 5th Marine Brigade, the regiment arrived in France on September 25, 1918, and served in the vicinity of Brest. Due to General Pershing’s disdain of the Marines being in France, he made sure that the 5th Brigade were not allowed to see combat and were instead put on guard duty until the war ended.
The jacket has two red-backed overseas chevrons on the left cuff denoting 12-17 months overseas. The red-backed chevrons are very rare to see and were only worn by marines. The interior shows good period sweat-staining with no markings we can find.
The included matching P1917 Breeches are in great condition, and these are more difficult to find than the tunic! They have a USMC quartermaster stamp dated 1918-1919, and they complement the tunic well!
