  • Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Set. This is an outstanding photograph set containing a great deal of information about the early history of parachutes in the U.S. Army Air Service during the early inter-war period. There are 32 photographs total, some of which are marked as being taken by the 3rd Photo Section at Bolling Field, Washington, D.C.. Others are marked as Official Photographs of the 5th Photographic Section, U.S. Army Air Service.

One photo shows soldiers repairing and folding parachutes, and the back notes that they each cost about $350 and have saved 40 lives in “Forced jumps”. Other photos show views from the air above Washington, D.C. as well as the interior of hangers, an Army balloon, and more. There are photos of air crashes and pilots being prepared with parachutes.

Then there are several official photographs of men of the “Caterpillar club”, men whose lives were saved by parachutes in forced landings, with small biographies below them.
