  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an inert oversized training rifle and it is impossible to convert it into a live round firing weapon. It is not made using any original parts and is completely inert, made from wood and metal. These are very hard to come by, especially with all the parts still intact. Trainers like these were normally made in house at one of the U.S. Military training aid centers, and were used in classrooms used as a way to familiarize service members with the workings of the M16A1 Rifle, which was in use for decades as a front line weapon, and is still in service in many areas today. Not really intended to stand up to any type of rigorous use, these were usually disposed of once damaged or obsolete, so they are extremely rare. This example came to us with the story that it was purportedly made by Colt for Classroom Training purposes, but it doesn’t look like any of the pieces are marked, so we are not sure how true this is.

This 2:1 scale example looks to have been made in the late 1960s or 1970s and is based on the M16A1 variant introduced in 1967, based on the handgrip style. This example has several functioning parts, and was made to familiarize soldiers with the buttons are other movable pieces. The safety, bolt, magazine, select fire, trigger, etc. are all present and move. The magazine is a dummy and has no rounds, nor can the trainer chamber a round. The magazine release is present, and is meant to train soldiers on reloading the gun, not chambering a round and firing.

Even better, it completely breaks down in an almost identical fashion to a real M16A1! This was an invaluable training tool for familiarizing service members with the weapon system prior to getting their hands on the real thing.

This is a very attractive display piece, and at 76 inches (6ft 4 inches) in overall length, it is very impressive! These are extremely hard to find, and this is the only example like this that we have had or seen.

The M16A1 model will come shipped on a stabilizing stand which was with it when we received it. It is a custom-made mount that even comes with a hanger for wall hanging.

    The M16
The M16 rifle (officially designated Rifle, Caliber 5.56 mm, M16) is a family of military rifles adapted from the ArmaLite AR-15 rifle for the United States military. The original M16 rifle was a 5.56×45mm automatic rifle with a 20-round magazine.

In 1964, the M16 entered US military service and the following year was deployed for jungle warfare operations during the Vietnam War. In 1969, the M16A1 replaced the M14 rifle to become the US military's standard service rifle. The M16A1's improvements include a bolt-assist, chrome-plated bore and a 30-round magazine.

In 1983, the US Marine Corps adopted the M16A2 rifle and the US Army adopted it in 1986. The M16A2 fires the improved 5.56×45mm (M855/SS109) cartridge and has a newer adjustable rear sight, case deflector, heavy barrel, improved handguard, pistol grip and buttstock, as well as a semi-auto and three-round burst fire selector. Adopted in July 1997, the M16A4 is the fourth generation of the M16 series. It is equipped with a removable carrying handle and Picatinny rail for mounting optics and other ancillary devices.

The M16 has also been widely adopted by other armed forces around the world. Total worldwide production of M16s is approximately 8 million, making it the most-produced firearm of its 5.56 mm caliber. The US military has largely replaced the M16 in frontline combat units with a shorter and lighter version, the M4 carbine.
