  • Original Item: Only One Available. Trench art is any decorative item made by soldiers, prisoners of war, or civilians where the manufacture is directly linked to armed conflict or its consequences. It offers an insight not only to their feelings and emotions about the war, but also their surroundings and the materials they had available to them.

Not limited to the World Wars, the history of trench art spans conflicts from the Napoleonic Wars to the present day. Although the practice flourished during World War I, the term 'trench art' is also used to describe souvenirs manufactured by service personnel during World War II. Some items manufactured by soldiers, prisoners of war or civilians during earlier conflicts have been retrospectively described as trench art.

The shell is completely void of any explosive content and is in total compliance per the BATF standards on inert ordnance. This round cannot be converted back into a live device and is not available for export.

We are not sure if the lamp works as we have not tested it but the wiring appears to be intact and complete. If you are wanting to use this as a functional lighting source, be sure to have it properly tested out beforehand. The shell casing is decorated with a lovely hand “punched” style image of an American Sailor riding a bucking kangaroo like it was a Bronco. Beneath the kangaroo image is a date and location that reads as 1925 AUSTRALIA. On the opposite side is a scroll with the following locations etched into it:

    SAN DIEGO
    LOS ANGELES
    SAN FRANCISCO
    HONOLULU
    PAGO PAGO
    SYDNEY
    MELBOURNE
    DUNEDIN
    CHRISTCHURCH
    WELLINGTON
    AUCKLAND

We believe these locations and the date to be for the U.S. Fleet Transpacific Cruise to Australia in 1925. An armada of U. S. warships visited the Australian dominions during July and August 1925, evoking memories of the Great White Fleet’s voyage in 1908. This extraordinary event provided a largely misleading demonstration of Australian-American goodwill at a time when resentment over wartime difficulties was only gradually fading. It also brought into sharp focus the newer and more regionally oriented aspects of Australian interest in the United States.

This is a lovely piece of art and it comes more than ready to be rewired and displayed!
