Original Item: Only One Available. This is a Navy blue Model 1902 peaked visor that belonged to a US Army NCO during the Pre-WWI era. The visor replaced the earlier pattern known as M1895. This particular pattern was the second visor cap design of the US Army after they stopped using the traditional kepi design. This example is identified on the sweatband to Sergeant James Albert Churm, who enlisted in Company F, 12th Infantry, Pennsylvania National Guard on May 5th, 1905. He re-enlisted on May 16th, 1908, May 24th, 1911, May 24th, 1914, and July 13th, 1917, being discharged on August 21st, 1917, likely due to his age, for a total of 12 years in service. He did not see service in WWI.
The visor is made of wool and features a leather visor that is bound with patent leather. The underside of the visor is lined with black colored lacquered paper. The officer's chin strap is retained by gilded brass federal regulation general service buttons, which are in good condition with some verdigris. The front of the visor has a beautifully embroidered Federal Eagle, which was directly embroidered onto the visor and was not on a separate piece of fabric. Considering this was used by a Guardsman, it would make sense why an NCO would wear an officer’s visor.
The inside lining of the visor is in great condition and still has a polished black cotton appearance, which is a testament to the quality of the material used during that time. The brown leather sweatband is in great shape and retains the size tag, 7, and a very small stamped name and location, JAMES A. CHURM / DANVILLE, PA. We’ve identified this as an NGP Sergeant who served from 1905-1917.
Despite the minor wear and tear, the overall condition of this visor is impressive. The scattered moth nips on some areas are not too damaging and do not detract from the visor's beauty and historical significance. This Model 1902 peaked visor is a valuable piece of history that has been preserved in excellent condition. It even retains the small maker’s hanging tag for the Pettibone Brothers of Cincinnati, Ohio.
