  • Original Item: Only One Available. The United War Work Campaign (November 11–18, 1918) was a one-week fundraising drive to aid U.S. soldiers during the lengthy demobilization that would follow World War I. President Woodrow Wilson requested that aid organizations pool their efforts on a single campaign for soldier morale programs "in order that the spirit of the country in this matter may be expressed without distinction of race or religious opinion in support of what is in reality a common service". Seven organizations took part: the YMCA, YWCA, American Library Association, War Camp Community Service, National Catholic War Council (Knights of Columbus), Jewish Welfare Board and Salvation Army.

A National Publicity Committee was formed and headed by Bruce Barton, a magazine editor who chaired the YMCA’s War Work Council. Posters, lapel pins, newspaper ads, The campaign raised more than $203 million for soldier-aid programs.

This poster is an example of one of the methods used in advertising this fundraiser. The top of the poster reads "Hey Fellows!", and underneath features 2 servicemen; a Soldier holding books in both hands, and a Sailor reading a book next to a pile of books. To the left of these is the message:

    YOUR MONEY
    BRINGS THE
    BOOK WE
    NEED

    WHEN
    WE WANT IT

The artwork is signed by Sheridan, and below this is:

    American Library Association
United War Work Campaign - Week of November 11-1918.

At the very bottom is an AMERICAN LITHOGRAPHIC CO, N.Y. marking.

The poster is in very good condition with all colors still vibrant. It does have some very minor tearing on the edges, as expected for a poster of this age. Measures 20”W x 30”H.

Comes more than ready for display!
