This is a handsome mid-19th-century embossed copper powder flask of the classic “Shell & Bush” pattern, dating from the American Civil War era or immediately surrounding period. Measuring approximately 8¼ inches overall, this is a full-size sporting or military-style gun flask rather than the smaller pistol flask typically associated with cased revolver sets. The flask retains much of its attractive dark brown surface finish together with a remnant of an old woven carrying cord attached to one of the suspension loops.

The pouring cap has the desired powder amounts stamped on to allow for proper pour rates and the spout is unscrewable. The spout housing is now unscrewable, instead affixed with two small rivets. The original spring in the tab is now broken, so there is no tension when you push it. It just opens and closes without any force.

The original woven carry strap is broken on one end, but the retained end has a green knot at the end, a common practice by makers during this period. The flask measures roughly 8 ¼” long.

With its embossed copper Shell & Bush body, substantial surviving brown finish, adjustable charger, intact suspension hardware, and unusual remnant of an old woven carrying cord, this is a particularly attractive example of a mid-nineteenth-century powder flask. The absence of a visible maker's mark prevents a firm American or British attribution, but its construction, dimensions, and decoration are entirely consistent with examples produced during the American Civil War era and make it an excellent companion piece for a collection of percussion firearms, Civil War material, or nineteenth-century shooting accessories.
